Need help on Raising Children with ADD/ADHD...

I just learned that my now 6 year old may be a candidate for ADD/ADHD. My husband and I have different opinions regarding the matter. My 6 yr old has not yet been diagnosed; however undergoing assessment, though, my husband has already diagnosed him himself and has all of this wonderful advice for ME. Now, please don't misunderstand my not feeling so well about his advise, it is that he has raised a son who is now 22 who is ADHD, and although my husband is not our son's biological father, he is still his father today. I feel it is wonderful for him to give me all of the great advise, but he has not shown me how to help my son, but he has all of this great advice and experience. This is very stressful for me today because, I have always thought I knew what ADD/ADHD was, however, not really studied the symptoms until recently. To be honest, I am not so sure that my son is ADD/ADHD; he is only 6 years old and is in Kindergarten. I welcome any of your insight and suggestions.

I had a friend that was diagnosed as ADD/ADHD when he was younger only to discover that it was due to visual problems. I have taught violin to autistic and add/adhd children and have also worked with a behavioral ophthalmologist. A behavioral ophthalmologist evaluates how the brain processes what the eyes see. For example, if the feet point outward, then it is a good bet that the person is an 'exo'....they are always looking for options; can't stay focused on projects; can't stay still because they are afraid o missing things. I am not saying that everyone that is diagnosed is MISdiagnosed, but there are other options to seek before medicating.

What are his symptoms? Why do you think he isn't ADD/ADHD and who diagnosed him as such? I am sorry you are going through this.
It would be best to have your child assessed by a school child study team or an outside group who would determine the nature of you son's learning problems and behaviors.
I have a son with aspbergers. I was given hope after I met with other Moms that also had children with ADD/ADHD/Bipolar/Asperbergs/and Autism. If you would like to meet some of the Moms I met with and hear what we have done with our 7 year old please contact me! I will be forever grateful, our lives a have improved dramaticaly!
I was diagnosed with A.D.D. myself when I was 22 years old and my youngest son was diagnosed when he was 5 years old.

Sabrina,
I was reading your response about behavorial opthalmology -- very interesting... what is an "EXO" ?
Hello

I am from the Greater Toronto area and worked in a ADHD clinic for almost a decade. You rightly said that he is 6 years old and in Kindergarten, so one of things you can do is get more information about how he is in school, and in daycare (if that applies). Speak to a developmental pediatrician about your concerns, and take it from there.
This is my new website for my book about raising a child with ADD http://distractingthedistractions.com/
Have you ever been to school during class time and been able to observe your son? Children act very differently at school than at home. If he is acting up more at school but not at home....it may not be ADD/ADHD. Children who truly have those conditions would show it no matter where they were. If he is only having issues at school...it may be a school issue. He may be bored or not have enough guidance and order in his school day. As a classroom teacher and a mom to two energetic boys that would be where I would start.
