What do you say to your kids when you need to leave for work and they are crying?

I can recall when Olivia was younger, she would cry so hard when I'd leave for work or a date with my husband. All I wanted to do was cancel my life and let her sit on my lap day in and day out. We did everything transitional objects, bridging, art, music all she wanted was her mom. Now my good friend is facing the same issue, I am wondering what do you do or say to help your kids manage the perceived loss? Advice appreciated.

I became an accidental children's book author because of those issues. Our then 5 y/o daughter wanted to know why we had to work and couldn't play with her and her sister all day. I went hunting for a book to fit the need and found nothing so I wrote Mommy & Daddy Work to Make Some Dough. Once she understood the why, it wasn't as difficult. Something else I suggest is to set the expectations ans be very specific before you leave. Make sure to get buy in from your child too. As an example, you might say the night before,   "Tomorrow mommy has to leave for work so here is how the morning is going to go. I'll help you get dressed and get your breakfast. When it's time for me to leave, I am going to give you one hug and one kiss and then leave. Do you understand?". Answer any questions and in the morning remind your child of the previous night's discussion. Also, stick to what you said you would...even if your child is crying. After about 5 days or so, the issues should be far and few between.

Best of luck!
