Working Mother's Social Network | MyWorkButterfly

I work as a Project Specialist at the University of Minnesota currently - I'm the queen of planning - I plan events, organize calendars and meetings, collaborate and coordinate to make things happen. I'm also a full-time graduate student in the Human Resource Development program, in which I will be obtaining a Master's in Human Resource Development and graduate certificates in online learning and adult education. I will need to complete an internship to finish my degree program.

I have been working since I was 12 years old in the clerical, telemarketing, and now high-level administrative positions and, getting my degree next year, I want to transition into Human Resources (I'm 29 now). Specifically, I am looking to be in training and development; preferably, I would like to facilitate online learning. I have been working in academia for over ten years, so nonprofit, academia or adult education might be a better fit for me than HR in the corporate world.

I want to set some goals for myself next year. What should I be doing in the year 2011 (besides finishing up the degree) to give me a leg up in the job search?

Thanks in advance for your tips :) ~Angie

Hi Angie - I too made a career change at about your age from banking into HR.  I applied for HR jobs (even at my own bank) to no avail. I got lucky, broke into HR in Compensation (given my banking background). It was due to networking. I started my Masters in HR while still in banking and got my job lead from a classmate.  So network, network, network. Join professional groups, get on LinkedIn (if not already), do informational interviews. If there is anything I can do to help let me know.
