Ashley,

My daughter has ADHD and my son does not.  As a parent, I think you just know.  She couldn't control her impulses, was defiant, oppositional and hyper.  The key behavior for me was her wandering.  She would wander around and could not sit still.   If you have concerns, take your child to a child psychologist.  He/she will evaluate your child and give you and your child's teacher surveys to complete.  We did this twice for my daughter.  The therapist even came to her school to evaluate her in the classroom setting.

I believe my son might be ADD or ADHD, how can I confirm this and what steps should I take? I have three children, two daughters 10yrs and 8yrs and then my son who is 4 1/2. I have noticed major differences in behavior and moods/energy levels. I want to be sure it isn't just the "boys are more work than girls" thing. Any advise or suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks
Ashley

Dear Stephanie,

The ways of dealing with ADHD without medication vary upon the symptoms and what you are trying to achieve. Certainly removing sugar and dyes from your child's diet has a positive effect on any child. There is a lot that can be done with behavior modification approaches too. It really depends on how the ADHD manifests with your child and the challenges.

ADHD is hereditary. I believe that ADHD mostly impacts the executive functioning of the brain -- I have a post on my blog that talks about this -- http://www.lipstickwisdom.com/2010/01/13/executive-functioning-what.... It might help trigger some ideas for you.

If you have some specific challenges you want to discuss, I am happy to brainstorm on non-medication ideas. Good luck!

Terry,

It is believed that the primary cause of ADHD/ADD is a deficiency in the prefrontal cortex area of the brain which is the area of the brain associated with "Executive Functions". ADHD is a neurological impairment that is largely believed to be passed through the generations genetically.

Some do believe that there is an environmental component to the disorder. My personal belief from what I have read and from my own personal experience is that it is a genetically based impairment.

Hope that helps!!

Hi Karen,
So glad you formed this group. I think there are so many moms in our community who are dealing with this challenge. It is running rampant in our kids generation especially in boys. Maybe you can share some of causes??

Hi everyone! My name is Karen and I have a son who has been recently diagnosed with ADD. I am sharing my learnings of ADD as well as learning disabilities on my blog, www.lipstickwisdom.com.

I am starting this group so that we can share our joys, our frustrations and our wisdoms gained from day to day experience. I hope that both moms of ADHD/ADD children as well as women with ADHD/ADD join this group and share.

I can be reached at kgriffithgryga@lipstickwisdom.com or at www.twitter.com/lipstickwisdom.
