Teaching Careers and Outlook

Any mom that works at a school as a teacher, para, substitute, etc. Yes, there's work/life, but how is this profession changing?

With the increased pressure on budgets, how is this effecting compensation and benefits?  Is this still a good career choice for moms?

What's the outlook for the teaching profession?

The Outlook for Teaching Careers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, "teacher job vacancies will vary by region. Rapidly growing states in the South and West will experience the largest enrollment increases. Enrollments in the Midwest are expected to hold relatively steady, while those in the Northeast are expected to decline. Teachers who are geographically mobile and who obtain licensure in more than one subject are likely to have a distinct advantage in finding a job. Overall, employment of elementary and secondary school teachers is expected to grow by 13 percent between 2008 and 2018.

The K-12 school did not work out...it was not an organization I felt good about but since then I had a chance to develop an online course for Learn NC and I still hold my other two jobs as online teacher for PBS and prek teacher.

Hello Everyone! I used to teach mathematics at the Secondary Level.  After the children came along, I decided to stay home. Now, I provide coaching for students that will help them be successful with their academic school year.

It has been awhile since I stopped in here to say hello. Since then I have started working at my children's school as a pre k and enrichment teacher. I still work as an online facilitator with PBS Teacher Line and soon I will begin teaching for an online school K-12. I am so excited to be living a balanced life with work and family. I love teaching and since leaving the classroom full time I have still been able to stay active in the field.

Anyone paying any attention to the new changes to NCLB? What are your thoughts?

Welcome Michele... I am a P.E. teacher, also! I just wrote a book that gives a shout-out to moms, but also shines a light down on the important lessons learned from my PE teaching experiences. I have taught elementary P.E. since 1993 in East Greenwich, RI. The message I am trying to teach my young students carries over so nicely into my own lessons that I share with my three children at home: play fair, be kind, be patient, etc...
The book is titled, "Mother Daze... tales from the imperfect playground" Check it out :)

Hello,
I am a physical education teacher working in Illinois! Love it so much that I write about my experiences.

We've been blessed to receive a grant from the State of Illinois to implement CATCH into our school district. I am so excited to make our elementary schools healthier and more active. We are teaching students to be healthy as a lifestyle, not a fad!

I am glad to be here.

High Fives,
Michele Batz, Ph.D.

Hi! I just joined this group today. I am a computer teacher at Passaic High School in Passaic, NJ. PHS is a large inner city high school with about 3000 students. Teaching computers is awesome because kids love it and it's a skill that will always be used in our high tech world. I love being part of that! Looking forward to chatting with all of you!

Hello teacher moms... I am a brand new addition to this group. I have been a P.E. teacher in Rhode Island since 1993-- yikes, I am seasoned. Today we rocked it to the Monster Mash while we played a very cool tag game named, "Trick or Treat"... ahh, to be seven years old again. I have a new book titled, Mother Daze... tales from the imperfect playground that hits stores on November 2nd -- yahoo! It's a total high-five to women. I am so glad to be here. Looking forward to chatting with some new peeps. :)
