A little about yourself...
New York's Elise Margolis is best known for her WORD paintings, fusions of Folk and Pop Art; acrylic on canvas paintings uniting one word with one image, portrayed in a vibrant palette of colors.

Margolis created her first word painting in 1993. A tribute to her professional accordion playing husband, Elise painted the word "Squeeze", with the image of an accordion. The painting was extremely well received and a concept was born.

"My word paintings are part accidental, part deliberate," says Margolis. "Sometimes I’m inspired by an image first, or the idea comes from the word, the process of matching the word to the image is very exciting for me. I pour over books looking for a word that will narrate the painting. I am also a lover of words, which is why I had to incorporate them into my work."

As for where the inspiration for the image originates: "I am inspired by people and situations that are part of my everyday life. Sometimes the marriage of word and image are true representations. Others are humorous and whimsical. Either way it is my intention to make the viewer stop, look, and smile."

For years people have been stopping, looking, and smiling about Elise Margolis's paintings. Her work has been featured on the number one rated NBC television series "Friends" in the 1996 season and again in the 2002 season. After seeing her work, Warner Bros. commissioned Elise to create an original series of Word paintings called “Looney Moods." The series included Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, Tweety and more, and was featured in the grand opening of the Warner Bros. 5th Avenue New York gallery. Margolis was again commissioned by Warner Bros. to create another original series called “Looney Tunes.” In this series, classic Warner Bros. characters are depicted with musical themes. These paintings have been exhibited in Warner Bros. gallery stores across the country. Additionally, Margolis's work has been featured in many New York City galleries: Excel Fine Art, The Jazz Gallery, Get Real Art, Gallery Eclectic, The Frank Miele Gallery, and more.

Recently Elise has begun working with pastel on paper.

“ My drawings are a combination of deliberate action and my sub-conscience. Whether I am inspired by a color-palettes or an idea the process of touching the pastel to the paper is thrilling. I am obsessed with the balance of my work. I use color palettes that help tell my story.”

Margolis regularly gives her talent and time to charitable organizations. She has created original paintings to Sting and Trudie Styler’s Rain Forest Foundation and to New York's Early Childhood Development Center.

Margolis has been painting since early childhood. She was born and raised in New York, where she continues to work and live with her musician husband and young son.
