no i have never tipped nor have i gotten tips (i babysat all through HS and College). $13/hour is expensive, i think that is enough without a tip. What we do is give something extra around christmas time, so you could consider that if the sitter becomes standard... PS i dont know anyone else who tips their sitters - i've never heard of it!

my husband just suggested that your husband go to the same place, the same time, the same day - like go to the park every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 - 12. you just end up meeting people consistently and then become friendly. really, my husband did that and made friends with the grocery store clerks, bank tellers, coffee shop patrons... we ended up with friends AND babysitters! nice!

We joined a neighbor hood club with a once a week playgroup so that helped find nearby people with kids the same age. And we just got all those parenting magazines and looked for free or cheap outings (local farms, parks, that sort of thing) - but the playgroup was a god-send and from that group we were able to find out a lot of things to do with kids. After a while, the moms and dads in the playgroup have become some of our closest friends... we joke that when we meet new people now, if they dont have kids that are near in age to our kids, it is not even worthwhile trying to become friends! Sad... but true...

OMG that is crazy actually, and almost a little sick....!!! I have to say in the past 6 years we've heard a lot of crazy comments. But on the plus side, I really think having Adam as the stay at home dad, and primary care giver to the kids, has made the other dads we are friendly with more apt to take the kids out to the park on their own on a saturday - unfortunately when they see me there with my kids without Adam they almost invariably are disappointed! "Oh.... so Adam stayed home? He is not coming to the park??" I am like -- sheesh give he guy a break he is with these kids ALL WEEK! LOL!!!

Yes, we find we are pretty much the only couple in town with this arrangement by choice and for so long. It's been really interesting because my husband is the one who knows all the moms really well in town, and they know him. So when they meet me it is like "oh! you are adam's wife! he is so great you know , bla bla bla" --- it is funny but also still a bit of a novelty i guess.

Hi Jayn - I work full time, have 2 kids, and a stay at home husband. My oldest is 6 so we've been living like this for about 6 years - there are definitely pros and cons to the arrangement!
