A little about yourself...
First and foremost I am a proud mom to a 16month little girl Nia. I am married to a wonderful guy for 5yrs. I work full time as in IT support for a University. My dream is to go back to school and retrain to work with children either in education or health field.

Hi Pauline - Thanks for sharing more info. It's great that you have a focus and are clear on what you would like to do. And, you seem aware of some of the limits you have, too. Both are important as you explore what is possible with your transition.

I do concur that it will be very useful to talk to professionals already in the special education field to understand more what it entails to see if it meets your interests and needs. And, also to discuss any opportunities to utilize your current experience with IT.

You may want to check out this book: Working Identity by Herminia Ibarra - it's a great book about 'career reinvention.'

Regarding going to school full-time, as you research degree programs, talk to admissions and other staff about how you can make that happen. What types of funding and fellowships, etc. are possible. And, also be very clear on what you can and cannot do/sacrifice. There may also be a middle ground that may work better for you.

Best to you,
Julie

HI Pauline,
Welcome to Butterfly! I am sure you have heard of the latest grant passed by Obama allowing moms an easier time going back to school. Check out this new policy our articles section under Resources tab to learn more.

There are some wonderful groups (under members tab) already established that include TEACHER MOMS or HOMESCHOOLING MOMS or MOMS BACK TO SCHOOL. The Butterfly members within these particular groups might offer you some great advice! Or, feel free to reach out to Julie Cohen, our resident Career Coach. She can be accessed on the left of the home page and is an expert in guiding women.

Don't miss the wonderful celebrity Mom Mentor videos as well as the inspiring working mom interviews. Feel free to add your comments below the edit or to blog about your experiences (we are giving away prizes for blogging!)

Let us know if you have any questions and please take a moment to upload your photo and to invite your circle of moms into the community by way of the invite tab.
Best,
Terry and Bradi
