A little about yourself...
I am a working mom and Corporate Buyer responsible for a $250M buy. I have worked in corporate America for nearly 20 years. In the last three years, I have been working to reinvent myself and start a writing and public speaking career. I have recently completed and published my first book focused on empowering working moms entitled "Mommy Leadership: How to Use Your Motherhood Experience to Grow as a Leader."

I always knew I would write a book, however, I wasn’t quite so sure of the timing or the topic. An Ohio native, I came to Detroit after completing an Industrial Engineering degree at Kettering University and an MBA at Indiana University to work as a Corporate Buyer in the automotive industry.

During my twenty years in corporate America, I matured professionally and gained considerable experience and insights into leading global teams and managing million-dollar projects. I acquired another aspect of leadership knowledge through my work in the church where I grew up. I developed a keen interest in the practice of leadership and its effect on organizations and teams. As a result, I began working on my PhD in the area of Organizational Behavior and Leadership while working full-time and raising my son.

When my daughter was born, I soon recognized that I was not Superwoman and could not continue my PhD work. I began to fear that being a devoted mother was hindering my career by limiting the leadership opportunities I could accept. One day as I was feeling a little sorry for myself, I had an epiphany: Motherhood is a leadership role and it offers a wealth of opportunity to develop leadership skills. This realization changed the way I looked at my experiences as a mother, and after talking with many of my friends, I felt compelled to share this concept with other working mothers.

In my first book, "Mommy Leadership: How to Use Your Motherhood Experience to Grow as a Leader," I describe the similarities between motherhood and leadership and show working mothers how to apply leadership skills developed in motherhood to professional leadership roles. I am also a certified trainer and offer seminars and workshops on the topic of Mommy Leadership. I am married and have two active children, a nine-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, who regularly challenge my motherhood skills.

Forbes Magazine's World's 100 Most Powerful Women

Posted on October 9, 2010 at 10:16pm 1 Comment

Earlier this week Forbes Magazine released its list of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women. According to the article, the list represents "a fresh look at power and creative influence." Based on my passion for motherhood and leadership, I couldn't help but count the number of these women who are mothers. What did I discover? By my count, 61 of the 100 most powerful women are mothers. The number 1 spot is held by a mother and 11 of the top 20 are mothers. This just confirms what I…

Are You a Builder or a Destroyer?

Posted on July 3, 2010 at 3:02pm 2 Comments

One of my favorite sayings is “There are two kinds of people in this world, builders and destroyers.” Not sure who is the author of that saying, but I tell my children that often and ask them which one best describes them. Of course, they both believe they are builders. My four-year-old daughter insists my nine-year-old son is a destroyer because he broke…

Fellow Moms,

I am new to this community and so very excited to be a part of it. I have already been inspired and would like to contribute some inspiration in the form of an excerpt from my new book Mommy Leadership: How to Use Your Motherhood Experience to Grow as a Leader. I hope it helps someone to recognize the leadership skills she already uses and that children are not the only fruits of…
