Weekly Wings - June 29, 2009 - Remembering ABCs, Moonwalks and our Angel

Terry and I learned that Michael Jackson, the legendary international 80's pop icon, died of a heart attack amidst my

son's birthday party. As the kids caught wind of the news they simply took a brief pause before proceeding to scarf

down their pizza. They don't "know" Michael the way we "know" Michael. Despite his crazy antics and baby balcony wielding ways, his music will be a constant reminder of my carefree youth listening to "Beat It" and other classic 45's on my turntable (my… Continue

The Best Laid Plans

When you have kids, making plans is hard work. Even if you only have two kids, it seems that as soon as you are walking out the door, someone comes down with fever. Plans are never made with complete confidence.

When you have a bunch of kids, there are way too many variables involved. At any given time someone either has a cold, pink eye, fever, rash, the vomits, head lice, a broken leg, or all of the above. On the rare occasion that every single child is in perfect health, plans are… Continue

Cheryl Whalen, mother and Group Fitness Manager at CAN DO Fitness manages to remain active for herself and for her family

as told by Butterfly Co-Founder Bradi Nathan

How is it that Michael Phelps consumes 12,000 calories a day? I stress over the 1,200 calorie intake I consume before dinner. So maybe I don’t swim 4,000 laps a day but I do hit the gym for one grueling hour. Exercise used to equal sanity in my chaotic life of motherhood. Now I use fitness as a chance to stress the importance of taking care of my body to my two children.

Jane Skinner, mother of twin girls, Co-Anchor of Fox’s Happening Now and wife of NFL Commissioner, Rodger Goodell, talks with Butterfly

as told by Butterfly Co-Founder Bradi Nathan

As mothers it is our job to protect our children from harm and from being exposed to inappropriate information. My son is eight and he is drawn to the timely magazines and newspapers that are scattered throughout my home. He reads headlines with photos reporting on murder, armed robbery and sex scandals. How can I shield him from the cruelty that exists so that he might…

Stacey Berman talks with Butterfly about how she turned her passion for tennis into a profession.

as told by Bradi Nathan

“What are your interests?” “What do you like to do?” These were the questions asked of me some ten years ago at a job interview. Having gone from college straight to corporate left no time to explore anything other than work. As such, I answered, “I like to spend time with family and friends… I like to exercise, kind of.”

It wasn’t until I had children that I learned how much I enjoyed writing (used as a form of therapy when they were babies). I… Continue

Mary Egan-Callahan and Brooke Thomas, Casting Directors at House Production & Casting in NYC, explains they not only hire the uninhibited and outgoing but teach them as well

as told by Bradi Nathan

My daughter was just four when she took over as the featured entertainer during a NYC party my family attended. With a microphone in hand, she belted out her version of the lyrics from Rihanna’s hit song “Umbrella.” The remainder of the night was spent cutting up the rug with boys three times her age. She is uninhibited and outgoing and I wish that I were actually more like…

Helaine Winer, mother of two and owner of the “The House” salon, found a niche - the gap between kiddie cuts and mom salon

as told by Bradi Nathan

I have just been made aware by my five-year-old that she is simply too old to get her hair cut while sitting in a fire truck. Oh, she’s over the Barbie car too. Despite all the bells and whistles that a traditional kiddie cut salon offers, my little one is determined to move on.

Fortunately for me, and my premature teenager, there is a solution. Helaine Winer, mother of two and owner of the “The House” salon in downtown Millburn, NJ, caters… Continue

AlexandMe.com contest winner

I was thrilled to get a call from Terry and Bradi (MWB's founders) that I was randomly selected to receive the $500 shopping spree to AlexandMe.com. My order was placed and received very quickly - I love the bathing suits and clothing that I was able to get for myself, husband, daughter and niece. The quality is great, the customer service was very good and overall, I am one happy momma! I definitely recommend checking out the site for your summertime and sun protection needs.

by Vivian Steir Rabin (my Back on the Career Track co-author and iRelaunch co-founder)

My iRelaunch co-founder and I recently heard from two acquaintances who landed jobs using some of our favorite strategies. Although their stories are unique, their strategies can be used by almost anyone. Here are their stories and strategies:

Erica’s story:

(Erica is a 15-year Wall Street veteran who had taken a long career break):

Our life is full of surprises. We travel along uneven surfaces, through hills and valleys and across roaring rivers. we can get caught in the eye of a raging hurricane, the wrath of an avalanche and the heat and devastation of fires. The events of our life can cause great turbulence. If we knew that when the storm passed, tranquility unmeasured by our thinking mind is waiting to embrace and heal us, we would wait out the storms with the calmness of a stream .

It’s because of our… Continue
