Family-Friendly Family Tips From Linda Schuller, Managing Director For Protravel

What budget saving travel tips can you suggest?

Stay in one room with your children. Try to fly on off days and at off hours. Travel off -season to places like Caribbean in the summertime. Or, visit an all- inclusive property/cruise. This way you will know the cost up front.
What particular family destinations do you recommend?

Cruises, Disney and the Caribbean.

Should families consider hotel services before booking a room? Why?

Yes. Investigate babysitting or if they can accommodate any special food requirements. Find out the procedure for making advance dinner reservations if they are required. You will want to know if they have a pool (with rules), and if there is access to the beach. And, ask how close that may be to the main building. Always let your agent know of your requirements.

How can a family benefit from trip insurance?

It's a must! If your child gets sick the day before the trip and you have to cancel, there could be very hefty cancellation penalties.

Is it realistic to take small children abroad?

It's realistic, but you must know the limitations of their abilities and attention span. Be realistic. If going to major cities, do the sightseeing that is appropriate to their age.

Where did you vacation with your family when your children were young?

As a travel agent with perks, we were fortunate enough to visit the Caribbean, Morocco, France, Florida, Spain, Rio, Kenya, Tanzania, Brussels and on cruises. Seeing travel through the eyes of your children is great experience.

Is it beneficial to visit an all-inclusive resort?

Yes, an all-inclusive gives you the cost up front. So, there are no surprises. The food is not always the best, but you do not have to leave the resort.
