First Day of Fall 2010. Halloween Costumes - Dress Like an Employee! - Weekly Wings

With all of the talk of the Video Music Awards last weekend, my 7-year old daughter has announced that she will be a “rapper” for Halloween this year. My 10-year old, with his long “surfer-dude” locks, intends to mock Justin Bieber with a tornado, blown from behind, hair in the face look. Terry’s 10- year old son has another form of imitation planned as he toys with the notion of dressing up like his principal. It’s only 30 some-odd days before the big reveal. We’ll be sure to post Halloween photos this year and we do hope you’ll do just the same! For some, in lieu of the less than stellar economy, they’d be happy enough to dress as employees this Halloween. Ironically enough, the very store that many of us race to, to dress our little darlings, plans on hiring 10,000 additional jobs this Halloween season. According to PR Newswire, “The average Party City will hire up to an additional 15-50 extra employees.” Lisa Laube, President of Party City goes on to say, "Our efforts to create jobs serve a dual-purpose: to provide people with opportunities to productively utilize their skills in today's downtrodden job market, and to provide shoppers with exceptional customer service during the busy Halloween season." Interested applicants can apply either on-line at partycity.com or in person at their local Party City store.

Today’s New York Times further reveals that of the 14.9 million unemployed, 2.2 million are 55+ and nearly half have been unemployed for over six months! Unemployment in this group- 7.3% (according to Department of Labor) is at all time record (double what it was at the beginning of this recession)!! It will take years to absorb the labor pool as The New York Times reports that many of this group will just age out. Understandably, there is huge fear from older workers that their resume will get tossed aside for “younger” ones.

DO NOT give in to this fear – know that employers value a return-to-work and an older talent pool. After all, 55+ candidates tend to be more mature, responsible, loyal and stable in their lives. Allow your children to aid you with your computer or technical skills that may have become outdated. Terry has asked her daughter on numerous occasions to step-in (nice mother-daughter bonding btw).
