Helaine Winer Dishes About Starting Your Own Business

Helaine Winer, mother of two and owner of the “The House” salon in downtown Millburn, NJ, caters to teens, tweens, and little “queens,” and dishes about starting your own business:

What resources can you share with women who may want to open up a brick-and-mortar business of their own?

The most important thing is to find a reason for the business. I recently ran into a woman who opened a jewelry store in our town. She was complaining about how there was no business in our town. There is business but not for just another jewelry store or clothing store but for something that has a specific market in mind that hasn’t already been overly tapped.

What are the rewards in owning your own business?

You are in control of your own destiny. I think for a lot of women who have taken a siesta from working to be with their kids, going back into the traditional work force is hard – either because of changing qualifications or because their lives are not “free and easy” like they were when there were no kids around. Having your own business allows you to make the rules and be in charge.

Are there particular precautions one should take in starting a business?

Start slowly.

What advice do you have for someone with a great idea, but who is on the fence about taking the “business owner” plunge?

Just get started. It is much easier that it looks.

I am interested in meeting/talking with women who have not yet started a business but have or are exploring the possibility. Anyone out there thinking?
