Just before Father’s Day, Terry and I had the pleasure of moderating Secrets Revealed with “Real Housewife” breakout star of Bravo TV’s “Real Housewives of NYC”, Jill Zarin, along with her sister, Lisa Wexler, a radio personality in Fairfield County, CT and host, "The Lisa Wexler Show," to benefit Go Red for Women: American Heart Association.

Jill was as unpredictable and commanding as she is on the tube and Lisa was equally as savvy and quick-witted as her radio audience might expect. The banter between the two was nothing short of brilliant, not to mention hysterical as Lisa tried to reel Jill in from going off on a tangent (or two). In the end, we learned a lot from these co-authors of Secrets of a Jewish Mother, and feel compelled to share their secret golden nuggets (passed down from generation to generation) with you:

Parenting. “Sit on the bed”- plant yourself on your child’s bed when they are in the room. Eventually, they will communicate even if it’s by saying, “get out of my room.” Do not succumb. We know who pays the rent. Let your child start the conversation. As the book reveals, “this is not your time to lecture; this is your time to listen.”

Friendship. “Be there. Apologize when wrong. Forgive. Let it go.” (We’re sure Jill re-reads this chapter often as she rebuilds her relationship with Bethenny.) Congratulate and commiserate and always call. Email only goes so far.

Career. “Where you realize your potential and fulfill your dreams.” Start your own business. Go back to school and know that it’s never too late (Gloria did it!). Find a mentor. Speak to a career counselor.

The evening was inspiring, fun and void of any Jill Zarin trash talk. Can you imagine how civilized a group of one-hundred women can actually be? Read the book. Trust us, you DO NOT have to be a Jewish mother to embrace the wisdom put forth.
