Lisa Cook Bayer, President Of Life Management Resources, Discusses Elder Care Advocacy

Lisa Cook Bayer, J.D., is President of Life Management Resources, LLC, a private elder care advocacy firm located in northern New Jersey.

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” These are the famous words of the sweet old lady on the Lifealert medical response commercial. When this first came on in the late 80’s (before the DVR when we actually had to watch commercials) it was a sign to run and get that quick glass of water before the show started again. Now, if we are lucky enough to have time to even watch television, it is our cue to grab a pen and paper (or our PDA) and jot down the number—and remember to call mom tomorrow with it.

How do you shuffle playdates, movie night, and business luncheons while making sure that mom’s home health aide shows up and dad is ready in time for the bus to adult daycare? And then what happens when the aide doesn’t show up, the bus has a flat tire and you have a 10:00 am presentation with a potential client that you have been wooing for the past year and a half?

As working women it is all you can do to juggle daycare, your households, provide some attention to your life partners, and service your clients. Add to that your new role as adult child caregiver for your senior parents and you are ready to book the next one-way flight to Bali!

Just like you would engage professionals to assist with other areas of life that are not within your area of expertise (most electricians would not try to operate on themselves and many doctors would do best hiring someone to install the operating room equipment), you might consider enlisting the help of a geriatric specialist to aid you and your loved ones with such things as family mediation, caregiver support, locating appropriate living situations, accessing private and public benefits, scheduling and attending medical appointments, locating home caregivers and facilitating relationships between other professionals such as lawyers, doctors, accountants, insurance and real estate agents and financial advisors.
