Melissa Peretz, Certified Fitness Instructor, “Weighs-In” On Food And Fitness

What is good to eat before you workout? The body uses carbohydrates for energy, so if you consume a meal with a mix of carbohydrate and protein beforehand, (e.g. cereal with milk or soy milk) the food, combined with the body’s glycogen stores (carbohydrates are converted into glycogen when not utilized immediately) should provide enough energy to get through the workout.
Other suggestions are:
• Whole-wheat toast with one teaspoon of peanut butter
• Trail mix or a small handful of almonds
• Whole-wheat bread with lean turkey
• Whole-wheat pita with hummus
• Fresh fruit, a few pieces of dried fruit, juice or salads

Usually it is best to try a few options and see what works best. All food should be eaten one to two hours beforehand, that way it will be utilized straight away.

How does a stimulant like coffee affect the body?

Coffee is a “stimulant’ which increases your metabolism by raising your heart rate. These physiological changes can be of benefit at the start of your work out by burning more calories straight away. However, the downside is that it can push your heart rate up too quickly, which could cause palpitations or other negative side effects in someone unused to exercise. The other benefits can be increased endurance, motor skills and concentration. Coffee can act as a diuretic, so it is necessary to drink plenty of water to counter any effects of dehydration.

I have gained 10 lbs in two years and I can not stop the snacking and eating the junk. How does a person go from eating good food thier entire life to prue junk . I want to go back to the way I used to eat, but it is so hard. do you have any ideas I crave cake and just not anycake it has to be made from scratch cake . I tried not baking and then only ate more , but of stuff i did not want. hhmm what to do .
