Our life is full of surprises. We travel along uneven surfaces, through hills and valleys and across roaring rivers. we can get caught in the eye of a raging hurricane, the wrath of an avalanche and the heat and devastation of fires. The events of our life can cause great turbulence. If we knew that when the storm passed, tranquility unmeasured by our thinking mind is waiting to embrace and heal us, we would wait out the storms with the calmness of a stream .

It’s because of our painful experiences that cause us to question and grow. For most of us it’s a launch to a new career, a new house, the end or beginning of a relationship or a new hobby.

I find that most of us do everything we can to numb our pain. we take drugs, alcohol or disassociate from it by doing things in order to not feel. Pain is such a frightening thing for most people that they do everything they can to avoid it. Yet it’s only in the feeling of our pain that we can truly pass through it and begin to see the sunshine.

I had recently encountered two very extreme and very different kinds of pains. The first one was a broken ankle. I was amazed at the intensity of the pain. At times it hurt so much I wanted to die just to end the pain. I found myself swallowing anything I could to numb the severity of it. There were times I found myself falling to the ground, praying for the pain to stop. It literally took my breath away. I was amazed at myself at how I handled it. After all, I’ve been through severe pain. I gave birth to four children, had two wisdom teeth pulled, encountered various injuries and was able to handle all the pain relatively fine.
