A recent study was conducted of primates and their friendship styles among females. The study showed that females who were social and had relationships with other females with children had a MUCH easier time with mothering than those that stayed more isolated and private.

"WASHINGTON (AP) - Baboon moms who make lots of friends among other females have better luck raising their young than do less sociable moms, according to a new study that supports the idea that primates, including humans, need a strong social network.

In a study appearing Friday in the journal Science, researchers found that baboon mothers who spent time cultivating friends were about a third more successful at raising their young than were females who were more aloof."

I know at times, I have felt the need to just hang out with the girls and then that Mama Guilt chimes in "You can't go out tonight, you've had a busy week and your kids need Mommy-time" Now, its very clear that the Girls Night Out is an important part of being a female, even in the primate world.

"They are spending a lot of time and a lot trouble in maintaining their social contacts," Silk said of the female baboons. "They spend 10 percent of their day grooming others and that is a big chunk of time for animals living in the wild."

Granted the baboon Girls Night out consists of grooming one another for hours but I think a Mani-Pedi excursion followed by drinks counts too!

Cheers Girls - no guilt allowed, the baboons are doing it...so should we!

Hey Alis - I taught you well, huh? Guess I had too many Girls Nights Out when you were growing up because you certainly got the message! Moms out there - your daughters are watching!
