Weekly Wings - April 6, 2009 "Our train ride down to Washington D.C."

On the train ride down to Washington D.C., I researched the subject for our next Butterfly Mom video interview - Jennifer Griffin. During those three hours, I noticed my heart beat just a little bit faster. I learned that Jennifer, FOX NEWS Political Correspondent, lived and reported from Jerusalem while raising two baby girls.

As the train sped towards D.C., I envisioned Jennifer in a flax jacket covering her pregnant belly, already proving to be a protective mother, or so I wonder. I get nervous when my son climbs a tree no higher than my thigh (I'm 5'10" - it's a high thigh). WHY? I will ask Jennifer WHY she put her girls at risk as gunfire repeatably rained nearby. I expected to see a tough woman answer the door upon my arrival- one who climbs barbed wire fences in seek of breaking news stories. Instead Terry and I were greeted by the warm friendly face of a mother who had recently given birth to a beautiful baby named Luke. Jennifer was home on maternity leave.

She politely gave us a kiss hello, introduced Terry and I to her sitter and offered us a refreshment. It's no wonder how she scored an exclusive interview with former Prime Minister Ariel Sheron. Jennifer has a way of making you feel at ease in her company. This attribute helped her to gain access to an interview with the mother of a Palestinian suicide bomber.
Jennifer admits, "I always drove 50 feet or so behind any buses for fear they would blow up. Once our sitter, Rose, had a bomber blow up under her apartment on King George Street and the blood from the bomber blew up on their freshly cleaned laundry hanging to dry on her balcony." She continued to describe how bombers exploded outside her daughter's preschool as the children witnessed a head rolling nearby.

I sat in awe, silence almost, imagining an unfathomable series of events happening in my own life. The words Why and How leave my lips.... "Adrenaline." Jennifer loved the adrenaline rush of it all while shielding her girls from public places, confining them to indoor play dates.

Now reporting from the Pentagon in D.C., Jennifer is happy to be in the U.S. and not reporting from the Gaza Strip where her colleagues from FOX were kidnapped. But, when I asked if she's here for good, a smirk ran across her face. Iran may very well be her next pit-stop.

Jennifer shared stories for fifty straight minutes yet we wanted to learn more. She reminded us that this world, and our place in it, extends well beyond suburban minutia. Jennifer's video interview will air only at MyWorkButterfly.com this Fall.

Happy Passover and have a wonderful Easter.
