Weekly Wings - June 1, 2009 - Hit A Home Run!

I hit a home run today. Not figuratively, literally! I literally hit a softball past the left fielder on the opposing moms' team. The best part was (that I didn't pass out around the bases) that my son and daughter were jumping up and down with excitement as I rounded into home base. I share this with you not because I choose to gloat (well maybe a bit) but because in every interview Terry and I conduct we ask moms, "What kind of role model do you hope to be to your kids?" Tonight I found my answer. I hope to teach my kids that moms can work and play hard and that women are strong on all fronts.

I hit a home run today and so did Judge Sonia Sotomayor who was nominated to the Supreme Court. It was truly a celebration of women at the White House this past Tuesday as the third woman and first Latina ever was nominated to the Court. This nomination speaks to the "gross imbalance on the Court where Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the lone woman serving. If confirmed, Sotomayor would become the third woman and first Latina to serve on the highest Court. Both are tremendously important steps forward and we applaud President Obama for his choice. We recognize the "importance of shaping a Court that better reflects the makeup of our nation. Ginsburg herself has reminded us that life experiences and personal perspective impact the careful judgment required of her fellow Justices." "Indeed, Sotomayor’s background is an inspiration to Americans everywhere but especially to women. Raised in a public housing project in the South Bronx by Puerto Rican parents, Sotomayor lost her father at the age of nine. Her mother, a nurse, than took on the daunting task of raising two children on her own, as so many women before and since have done."*

Rebecca Lobo, our feature mom for the month of June, has also scored big. Watch this WNBA all-star, ESPN Commentator and Olympic Medalist in her exclusive video interview with Butterfly. She kicks off her sneakers to share her personal stories about her mother's battle with breast cancer and the unfair pay structure of women in basketball. Stay tuned this month as we offer up a "Lobo signed basketball and photograph" to one lucky B'fly Mom.

June is jam-packed with additional videos of nationally known comedian, Jessica Kirson (you will crack up!). Jessica is honored in June as we celebrate "Gay and Lesbian Pride" Month. Finally, meet our resident Fitness Expert, Melissa Peretz as she shares her journey of balancing family, fitness and fritos (she wouldn't dare).

Hit your own home run this week - whatever that may be!
