Weekly Wings - March 9th, 2009 "Barbie celebrates her 50th birthday this year"

Barbie celebrates her 50th birthday this year and I must admit that she looks stunning for her age. There has been much press and planned events around the celebration of this iconic doll that I, as a child, never embraced. Labeled as a tomboy of sorts, I never took to her porcelain skin and hour glass figure. Yet, I still insisted on buying my own daughter a Barbie when she was just 3 years of age. She didn’t pay her much mind either.

What kind of role model is Barbie anyway? Not the kind that I hope to be for my daughter. In the dozens of mentor interviews we've conducted with moms over the past 6 months we asked this question a lot: "What kind of role model do you hope to be for your children?" I thought I'd share some "un-Barbie-like" answers with you:

"I hope that especially my daughter Alice will know that she can follow her dreams and
be anything she wants to be." Liz Lange, Liz Lange Maternity

"I hope that they see me as a mother who has always pursued her dreams while prioritizing my family and as someone who is always ethical, loyal, and determined."Samantha Ettus, Best Selling Author, On-Air Correspondent

"Hopefully I am teaching my daughters how to be a good mom and a good wife. Those are the most important things I can teach them. Then, hopefully I am showing them that a woman can follow her dreams outside of the home as well. Mostly, I want them to have very good self-esteem -- and I think my husband and I are good examples of adults who are very comfortable in their own skin." Rebecca Lobo, WNBA all-star, ESPN Commentator

"I would hope to be a role model to Chandler for compassion and justice; for losing the sense of entitlement that seems so prevalent in our culture, and realizing that 80% of the world lives in vastly different circumstances where the same opportunities are not available. For being curious and open about the rest of the world and how other people live, think and feel. To not take for granted the things we are fortunate enough to have and realize
that the human experience is a shared one." Shelley Seale, Author

As a working mom or as a mom who'd like to explore professional aspirations, know that your child(ren) emulate and look up to you, not Barbie. If you have recently lost a job and need to find a new one, you are teaching skills of survival. If you volunteer, you are teaching social your job to follow a passion, you are teaching about risk, reward and happiness.

Celebrate Barbie's 50th if you must but I promise you'll enjoy that cake all the more when
www.MyWorkButterfly.com turns 50.
