Working Mom: The Indian Experience

Hello, everybody! It's great to be part of such a wonderful network. I always knew that working mothers must face the same kind of challenges all over the world, but I'm overwhelmed to find so many interesting stories on this site. Didn't know how closely connected we really are! I'm a Civil Servant and a writer, a wife and Mom. So, yes, it's a full day. Two of my novels were published last year. 'Toofani Days, Valentine Nights' is a multicultural romance set in Agra. It's available via www.abook2read.com, while 'The Marine and the Indian Rose' is a paperback from Publish America and it's available in the US at present.
As a Government servant and a woman I face many challenges every day, particularly in a society like India, which is in a state of transition. Traditionally women have not been active professionally but things have certainly changed now. Many, many women occupy positions of power and I believe that's the driving force behind the country's transformation into a modern and progressive democracy! But, yes, I suffer from the usual guilt of not spending enough time with my son. Is there ever the perfect balance? Probably not. But you know something? I feel it's important for kids to see their Moms going out to work (or working from home). It serves to break traditional stereotypes; it makes the kid see that it's normal for Mama and Papa to be working, earning, and loving him!
